Tasty Vegan Fish Substitute Recipe

Vegan salmon on avocado toast

This tasty vegan fish substitute recipe is one I’d recommend trying out. In this recipe, I aimed to find a tasty alternative to salmon. You can make amazing vegan nigiri rolls, sandwiches and the like with this dish. I like to have some of them on hand to bring my breakfast to the next level. Even my non-vegan friends enjoy this little creation and the great dishes you can make from it. Especially this vegan avocado-salmon toast never fails to amaze!

Furthermore, this dish is healthy, using carrots as a basis and extra virgin olive oil as a source of fat. It is super fun to make, and it is awesome what kind of taste you can achieve using plant-based ingredients only.

Ingredients for this Vegan Fish Substitute Recipe:

Ingredients for the vegan salmon substitute
  • Carrots
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Nori seaweed
  • Dill
  • Capers
  • Mustard
  • Garlic Powder
  • Lemon juice
  • Salt

We are using carrots as a base, as they already possess a rather salmony colour by default. They will reach a nice soft texture when steaming or baking them, working well for sandwiches or sushi. To recreate the fattiness, we will marinate the carrots in an olive oil-based marinade. Such brings some more of the mouthfeel and experience when eating salmon. Next, we need to find a way to introduce fishy notes. A combination of nori seaweed, dill, and capers balances nicely and gives a surprising flavour. A spoonful of mustard, garlic powder, lemon juice, and sea salt will round it off. While this dish does not manage to fully imitate salmon, it possesses a few of its characteristics and tastes fantastic anyways!

How to make a tasty vegan fish substitute:

Take your carrots, peel off their skin, and slice them into long, thick slices or strips, depending on your preference.

Steam the carrots until completely tender. You can use a designated steamer if you have one. Otherwise, it works perfectly fine to add them to a sieve, place them over a pot with boiling water, and cover the construction with a lid.

While the carrots are steaming, you can already prepare the marinade. Add the olive oil and water to your blender, together with the nori sheets, capers, lemon juice, mustard, salt, and dill. Blend until reaching a smooth emulsion. Check for seasoning. You aim for a strong, fatty, salty taste.

When the carrots are completely tender, take them from the heat and allow them to cool. Put the carrots into a bowl or container, and cover them with the marinade. Place them into the fridge and allow them to marinate overnight.

Marinating carrot strips

When the carrots have finished marinating, add them to your sieve and rinse off the marinade. The flavour should have penetrated through the carrot by now. After rinsing, pat them dry, drizzle olive oil over them and coat evenly.
