Juicy Pulled Jackfruit Burgers

Pulled jackfruit burgers plated with potato wedges

Jackfruit is such an amazing ingredient. The BBQ-seasoned and pulled jackfruit makes a delicious meat substitute for one of my all-time favourites: Burgers! It is juicy, has a great consistency, and you can load it with flavour. They are smokey, sweet and rich. Caramelised onions, avocados and some pickles, and it’s burger heaven! The texture of jackfruit resembles pulled pork, so this burger has a deliciously juicy filling. It is one of my favourite ways to make tasty vegan burgers! Also, they are super simple and quick to prepare. Let me show you how to make the most delicious BBQ pulled jackfruit burgers!

Ingredients for making Jackfruit Burgers:

There are lots of spices that work fantastic to give the jackfruit this BBQ-style flavour. The preparation in itself is super simple. If you don’t have molasses, maple or date syrup work fine as well! I used some rather sturdy buns for these burgers, but feel free to use any buns you like. Also, I am a pickle guy on burgers. I added my delicious pickled red cabbage. It worked fantastically to balance the BBQ flavours of the pulled jackfruit. Pickled cucumbers or pickled onions will taste fantastic as well!

How to make Pulled Jackfruit Burgers:

Making these burgers is super straightforward: We only need to prepare our ingredients, make the pulled jackfruit and caramelised onions, and assemble the burger.

Making the Pulled Jackfruit Filling:

Take the jackfruit from the can, and give it a quick rinse. Pull the jackfruit apart using your hands or a fork until you have shredded jackfruit resembling the consistency of pulled pork.

Jackfruit rinsed and pulled in a glass bowl.

Heat your pan to low-medium heat, and add some olive oil, as well as minced fresh garlic. Allow the garlic to turn translucent so it infuses the olive oil nicely before adding the shredded jackfruit. Next, add the soy sauce, molasses, cumin, smoked paprika, paprika powder, garlic powder, and ketchup. Combine well, and cook until the jackfruit is nicely coated and has absorbed all this delicious flavour.

Making Caramelised Onions:

While the jackfruit is cooking, let’s get these onions caramelised. I like to cut the onion in half, and slice it down. For super thin, melting caramelised onion, you can use a mandoline.

Next, cook the onion on low to medium with some olive oil while continuously tossing them around so they don’t develop too much colour. If you want to speed up the process, you can add a touch of cane sugar as well. Season with salt and pepper.

Bringing Everything Together:

After 15-20 minutes, the jackfruit should be ready, and the onions should be nicely caramelised. Check for seasoning before moving on to assemble the burgers.

I like to give the buns a toast before moving on. Thinly spread some vegan mayonnaise on the sliced bun, and give them a light toast.

To assemble the burgers, I gave the buns another layer of vegan mayonnaise, lettuce, and some sliced tomato before loading them with a big portion of the delicious pulled jackfruit. On top, I added delicious caramelised onions, pickles of your choice, and avocado.

This burger is just such a great combination of flavours and consistencies. I hope you like this pulled jackfruit burger as much as I did!

Some Great Side Dishes to this Burger:

  • I had it with some simple oven-baked potato wedges
  • Standard fries or sweet potato fries would make great sides as well.
  • A simple salad or vegan coleslaw are great complements!
