Why not turn a true superfood into a refreshing ice cube? These orange turmeric ice cubes have superpowers: Two healthy juices merry into one nutrient-packed ice cube. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which has an anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effect. To activate the curcumin, we will add a little oil and some pepper. I’ll admit the ingredients seem unusual, but they work fantastic in this recipe! Turmeric juice isn’t the tastiest on its own, but when paired with orange juice, the combination is quite nice. I topped it off with the grated zest of an organic orange. These orange turmeric ice cubes will turn your drink into a vitamin bomb!
Ingredients for making Orange Turmeric Ice Cubes:
- Turmeric root
- Organic oranges
- Sunflower oil
- Pepper
Optional addition:
- Daisies (42 pieces)
How to make Orange Turmeric Ice Cubes:
I wear gloves when I work with turmeric. The root stains the skin so strongly and for so long! Without gloves, you’ll get yellow fingernails and skin. Also, be careful not to spill juice. It can be quite a mess to work with turmeric.
Start with washing an organic orange, then grate the zest from it. After that, we squeeze the three oranges.
Next, wash or peel the turmeric and grate it on a fine grater. Pour the orange juice and the grated turmeric into a glass or stainless steel blender jug (plastic could become discolored), add a few drops of oil and a little pepper, and blend everything with a blender. Finally, press the grated pulp with a spoon through a sieve over a cup. And now, the delicious healthy juice for the ice cubes is ready!
Pour the juice into the ice cube mold, and place it in the freezer. After about 24 hours, the ice cubes are ready to be served. They make tasty additions to tonics, sodas, a cup of tea, or simple sparkling water.
Decorating the Ice Cubes:
I was curious if edible flowers could be frozen to give the ice cube a fancy look. So, I picked some daisies. Daisies are an edible and healthy local flower around here, so they make a perfect addition to this recipe. They wilt quickly, so I washed and used them as soon as I picked them. I put them on top of the juice in the ice cube compartments. This addition is optional and doesn’t do much for the taste, but they make a cute surprise!
