Ingredients for making Ginger Melon Ice Cubes:

  • Ginger root
  • Water
  • Honeydew melon

Needed Equipment:

  • Ice cube tray

My ice cube tray has 14 compartments and is 25cm (9,9inch) in length x 10cm (3,9inch) in width, and 3,3cm (1,3inch) in height. It has a nice silicon bottom making it super easy to get the ice cubes out. You can, of course, also use a different tray.

How to make Ginger Melon Ice Cubes:

A sliced Galia melon and ginger root are lying on a pink wooden base.

First, peel the ginger and grate it with a fine grater. Fill a tea filter bag with the grated ginger and wring out the ginger juice. You can, of course, also use a juicer if you have one on hand. Making ice cubes with ginger juice is one of my preferred ways to preserve ginger if I have too much on hand and it would otherwise dry out. Simply combine the ginger juice with the water.

Alternatively, if you don’t have tea filter bags, you can try simmering the ginger at a low temperature in the water for 15 minutes before pouring it through a strainer. You can then use that water to make ice cubes. I prefer making them with fresh juice, though!

Now, we take the melon and prepare pieces of melon that fit well into the ice cube compartments. Add one piece to each before filling them with ginger water and popping them in the freezer!

A ice cube mold with ginger juice and pieces of galia melon are standing on a pink wooden underground. Behind the ice cube mold are a ginger root and a slice of melon.

Tip:

When the liquid becomes a solid, its volume increases. If you add too much ginger juice, the ice cubes will stick together, making it harder to remove them from the tray.

You can also transfer the frozen ice cubes into a zipper bag and store in the freezer if you need to use the ice cube tray for other ice cubes.

A bottle adds water into a glass with ginger melon ice cubes and a straw, that stands on a pink wooden base. Next to the glass is are slices of melon and ginger roots and a napkin.

These ginger melon ice cubes definitely make a glass of water feel like a fancy drink. They also work well in alcoholic beverages such as gin tonic or prosecco.
