A Halloween sesame popsicle lies on a black plate with a gold rim. On the left-hand side is a napkin patterned with Halloween pumpkins. Behind it is a black oblong bowl with five more Halloween sesame popsicles. A napkin with a Halloween pumpkin pattern can also be seen behind it. Beluga lentils are scattered on the black slate background.

Who dares a scary dessert? These Halloween popsicles are perfect for the holiday season! They are made of sesame and lentils, yuck! It’s hard to believe, but the whole family here found them super tasty and interesting and voted them more than worthy of a recipe! These popsicles are also very healthy due to their wholesome ingredients, so you don’t have to hold back when snacking! They are a great Halloween surprise if you want to entertain adult guests – children may find the taste strange. It tastes toasty, a bit like coffee. A slightly advanced taste, but 100% delicious – dare to try them out!

Ingredients for making Halloween Popsicles with Sesame:

There are many bowls on a black slate background. In the middle, there is a bowl with black sesame, around that there are bowls with chocolate pieces, blanched almonds, cinnamon, sesame oil, cocoa powder, dates, Beluga lentils, and a jug with coconut milk. Behind it there a two ripe bananas and a lemon.
  • Black sesame seeds
  • Beluga lentils
  • Banana
  • Coconut milk
  • Dates
  • Cocoa powder (100%)
  • Sesame oil
  • Lemon juice
  • Ceylon cinnamon powder

Decoration:

  • Dark chocolate sprinkles
  • Dark chocolate 78%
  • Blanched almonds

Needed Equipment:

  • Blender
  • Popsicle mold
The overall size of my popsicle mold is 21x14x10cm (8,2×5,5×3,9inch), and the capacity of each popsicle mold is 75 ml. It allows you to make 12 popsicles at once.

How to make Halloween Popsicles with Sesame:

We start by pitting and roughly chopping the dates. We put them in a pot, together with the black beluga lentils, then pour in water. Cook them together until the lentils are tender.

A large glass bowl with cooked beluga lentils stands on a black slate background. In front of it is a wooden bowl with black uncooked beluga lentils.

Black sesame seeds have a stronger, richer, and slightly nuttier flavor than the white ones. We will lightly toast them to enhance the nutty taste of our Halloween popsicles.

So, take a pan and lightly toast the black sesame. Next, we have to break up the small grains and turn them into a paste, which I do by hand using a pestle and mortar. But it’s better to start in small portions and gradually add more. It smells wonderfully like sesame! Grind them until having a coarse sesame paste.

Now squeeze the juice from one lemon and roughly chop the banana.

Finally, we put all the prepared ingredients in the blender. The lemon juice, coconut milk, cooked lentils with dates, black sesame paste, banana, cocoa powder, cinnamon, and sesame oil all go in! Start mixing until we have a creamy consistency.

Pour the mixture into the popsicle mold, add popsicle sticks, and freeze overnight.

Decorating Halloween Popsicles:

The next day, we prepare the eyes and teeth with the blanched almonds. Cut the almonds in half with a knife. I used a serrated knife. We will need 24 halved almonds for the eyes. Then, cut more halved almonds to the size of teeth for the scary mouth. Break the chocolate into pieces and put them in a bowl. Place the bowl in a larger saucepan, add hot water, and let it melt while stirring.

Firstly, we remove one frozen popsicle from the mold and quickly dip the top into the chocolate bath. Immediately roll the popsicles in the sprinkles as the chocolate hardens super fast. There goes the haircut! Next, add a blob of melted chocolate to the eye area and immediately press an almond into it. Repeat this for the other eye. Now add two blobs for the teeth and press the shaped teeth made of almonds in. Afterward, we form a chocolate line as a mouth on our popsicle. Add pupils to the eyes, and you are done!

You will notice that the chocolate hardens at lightning speed, so you have to be quick. When a popsicle is decorated, quickly return it to the cold. Place each in a freezer bag and put them freezer where they wait to be eaten!

One hand holds a Halloween popsicle with sesame seeds. In the background, slightly blurred, you can see the bowls with the ingredients for the decoration.

FAQ to sesame:

Why black sesame instead of golden sesame?

The black variety is the original form of sesame. Black sesame seeds have a stronger, richer, and slightly nuttier flavor than white sesame seeds. A sesame paste (called tahini) made from unpeeled sesame seeds, is much more bitter, but naturally healthier.

What are the healthy ingredients in sesame?

Sesame seeds contain a lot of fat, protein and fiber. Sesame oil is high in healthy unsaturated fatty acids. The seeds contain essential minerals, nutrients, vitamins (B vitamins), magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. Sesame is also a good source of iron and calcium. Black sesame seeds are also said to have antioxidant effects.

Notes

If you want to store your frozen popsicles for another day, just put them in a zipper bag and pop them in the freezer! You can also buy small cellophane bags (plastic-free, food-safe and biodegradable) so you can wrap each popsicle individually before putting them all in a zipper bag.
