Ever used fava beans to make a delicious dip? If yes, good choice, and if not, check this out. This delicious fava bean spread might be your new favourite meze!
Fava beans are a common ingredient in middle-eastern cooking, where they are called ful or foul. They are so popular that they make the key ingredient to the national dish of Egypt, called ful medames. For some reason, these fantastic beans are not that popular in the west. While everybody loves to eat hummus, fava beans are just as great to make dips and spreads. If you have never had a fava bean-based spread before, give this recipe a try. Fava beans are a fantastic source of protein and folate, making a valuable addition to your diet. They are cheap, and the spread is super easy and quick to prepare.
Ingredients for Delicious Fava Bean Spread:
- Fava Beans
- Tahini
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Lemon juice
- Salt & pepper
- Optional: Garlic powder
- Optional: Herbs or spices to garnish
First of all, you will need fava beans as your base ingredients. I like to get canned precooked beans because they otherwise take so long to cook to softness. They work amazingly to make this spread. Secondly, you will need tahini and olive oil. Furthermore, salt, pepper, and lemon juice are necessary for making the bean spread. Also, you can add any spices to your liking. I added a bit of garlic powder and topped it with dried parsley and sumac.
Fava Bean Spread Recipe:
Firstly, drain your canned fava beans, and add them to a pot with hot water. Boil the beans for another 15 minutes until they can be easily mashed with a fork. Drain the water, and add the cooked fava beans to a sieve. Next, take a spoon and smooth the fava beans through the sieve, separating the skin and the creamy insides from the beans. Add the bean mash to a bowl with your tahini, lemon juice, spices, and a dash of olive oil. Mixing the ingredients should now result in a thick bean paste.
Now, slowly add tiny sips of water, and whisk it in. Stop when the dip reaches your desired consistency. Season the spread with salt and pepper, and top with the spices of your choice. Additionally, dressing the dish with extra virgin olive oil works fantastically.
How to Enjoy this Fava Bean Spread:
You can either enjoy this dip on bread or use it to top salads or other dishes. I also like to make sandwiches with it or dip some crispy baked flatbread in it. Also, it makes a great addition to any meze plate. I hope you enjoy this fava bean spread! Let me know what you like to eat with it!
